Park Description
Like many former estates, Lenoir Preserve has benefited from the common practice of wealthy landowners to import and plant specimen trees. Portions of the formal gardens have been converted to a butterfly garden and community gardens. From the front of the mansion facing the river, birders can watch bird migrations.
The former carriage house is a nature center and headquarters for the Hudson River Audubon Society. The Lenoir mansion dates from the 1850s when it was built for Samuel Tilden, a former Governor and Presidential Candidate in 1876, who also owned a home at what is now Untermyer Park. Aldenwold, another old mansion nearby, burned down in 1979. Westchester County purchased the Lenoir parcel in 1976 and then bought the site of Aldenwold after the 1979 fire.
