Baldwin Memorial Lean-to Work Trip - August 4th to 8th

Trail Conference Catskills Lean-to Crew Leader Eric Friedman will be leading a work trip to the Baldwin Memorial Lean-to on Mount Tremper to make some much needed improvements following damage from the winter season. Volunteers can come for a day, or stay the weekend at the lean-to with the crew.

What we will be doing: Rebuild the old and recently tree damaged roof. The tree damage last fall or winter was the last straw for the 50 year old patched up roof. The work will involve:

  • Carry in materials to the project site
  • Removing the existing roofing shingles and rafters
  • Replace and construct a new roof
  • Carry out tools and debris from the project

Who to contact: If you are able to help out with the project, please email Eric Friedman, [email protected]. Specify which day / days you are available. Please include cell and home phone numbers, and where you are coming from for possible carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations. Feel free to contact Eric with any questions by email, text or call 845-594-3817.

The Hike in/Water/Shelter: In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or overnight, your help will be needed to carry in and out tools and some materials.  The lean-to is 2 miles from the road, but Eric is working on obtaining access closer to the project site and getting assistance from the DEC. As the trip spans a few days, some volunteers will coordinate their arrival, others may hike in on their own. Details to be worked out. There is a good spring for water. Recently the  Baldwin Shelter floor was repaired and the privy rebuilt. During the work trip, the shelter will be in some stage of construction and may not provide rain protection.

When to meet: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and Monday August 4th-8th at 10am. You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience!

Where to meet: DEC Trail access and parking is on the Mt Tremper - Phoenicia Road (Plank RD.) south of Phoenicia, off  NYS Route 28. It is a two mile uphill hike to the shelter. Closer access may be available with a flagged line leading to the marked  trail. There is limited cell service for texting or calling, at or near the shelter, but not by the road. (Boiceville has cell service).  As the trip spans a few days, some volunteers will coordinate their arrival, others may hike in on their own. Details to be worked out.

Minors under 18 will need to fill out a guardian consent form, with a parent or guardian present during the worktrip.

What to bring: Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water (also available from the spring), safety glasses, gloves, bug dope, water purification if desired and a headlight for the hike out. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. Tools will be supplied. For those staying over the crew does a combination of shared and individual food, which will be organized following registering.

Thank you again for your desire to help out, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the shelter!
