'Opt Outside' on Black Friday November 24 at Norvin Green State Forest!

Join us for another trail restoration day at the Overlook Rock Loop in Norvin Green State Forest

Date: Friday, November 24

Time: 10am-4pm

Meeting Location: Stonetown Recreation Center Parking, Ringwood, NJ

Work: The Overlook Rock Loop is a rugged 3.4-mile hike in the quiet northern stretches of Norvin Green State Forest. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of the popular trails which concentrate the southern half of the park, the Overlook Rock Trail offers a uniquely solitary hiking experience through varied terrain. Just getting to the loop is an adventure: hikers must first hike a 2 or more miles of additional park trails to gain access to the Overlook Rock Loop, and limited parking at all trailheads keeps the crowds away. The loop rewards hikers with several scenic vistas, including a panoramic viewpoint atop the namesake Overlook Rock, which has great eastern views across the Jersey Highlands. It also serves as a connection point between Norvin Green State Forest and Long Pond Ironworks State Park, providing adventurous hikers with many opportunities for high-mileage romps.

Because of its comparative remoteness and limited access, the Overlook Rock Loop has - unfortunately - become overlooked. Its pathway is now overgrown, and poor blazing along the trail currently makes navigation here a challenge. With your help, we hope to restore the Overlook Rock Trail and create a safe, lasting walkway for hikers seeking solitude through this quiet section of Norvin Green State Forest.

The Overlook Rock Loop is 3.4 miles with 330 feet of ascent. It shares 0.6 miles with the outer portion of the Manaticut Point Loop. The shortest access point to the Overlook Rock Loop is via the West Brook Connector Trail and a section of the Manaticut Loop Trail, which adds 1.65 rugged miles of hike and 430 feet of ascent one-way.

Bring: Loppers, hand saws, gloves, safety glasses, lunch/snacks, water, other hiking essentials. Tools will be available for those who do not have them.

Cell Service Note: Cell service may be limited in the field.
