Highlands protection gets big federal push

Body

A $4 million bump in federal aid to buy and save land in the Highlands has been attributed to the new focus of the Obama administration and its efforts to shore up national parks.

The funding is contained in the Fiscal Year 2010 Interior Appropriations bill, H.R. 2996, which was approved by the House by a vote of 247-178.

The $4 million is still significantly less than the $10 million annual ceiling authorized in the original act, which was largely the work of Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-11.

Projects to be preserved through the funds will be determined by all of the four states in the Highlands region.

In addition to the $4 million, the House also approved $1 million to buy more land for the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Frelinghuysen said in a statement.
