State Parks asks hikers to avoid Harriman's backcountry

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is advising patrons to refrain from hiking in backcountry of Harriman State Park until further notice due to an ongoing, multi-jurisdictional police search for a murder suspect thought to be armed and hiding in the park. Cautionary flyers are being posted at trailheads.

In a related move, the park has closed its Beaver Pond Campground until further notice.

Park managers urge hikers to seek recreational opportunities elsewhere until further notice.
