Yorktown Trail Link Opens; Hudson River Valley Greenway Grant Supports More Trail Work

Body

Opening day at the Sylvan Glen Preserve section of the Yorktown trail system.Hikers are already out exploring the newly opened link in the Yorktown Community Trails Project. A $4500 Hudson River Valley Greenway grant will further the next phases of this project, which aims to create a 12-mile trail network in the town.

On October 20, the Trail Conference joined with its partners on the Yorktown Community Trails project to mark the opening of a new trail through the Sylvan Glen Preserve. The occasion included announcement that the Hudson River Valley Greenway had awarded a grant of $4500 to the Trail Conference for the project, one of just seven awards made in the 2010 Conservancy Small Grant Program. The funds will be used to purchase materials for bridges, puncheon, kiosks, signs, and interpretative materials.

The grant requires a 50-50 match, some of which includes funds donated by Westchester Mountain Biking Association as well as grants from Clifbars and Specialized. An environmental assessment by a Westchester County Parks employee and forthcoming volunteer hours of trail clearing and blazing will make up the difference.

Representatives of the Trail Conference, Westchester Mountain Biking Association, Yorktown Parks Dept., Westchester County Parks, and town officials gathered in the afternoon for an official ribbon-cutting at the trailhead for the new trail in the Sylvan Glen Preserve, then headed out for a short hike.
